Have you ever felt totally out of place, inadequate, incorrectly dressed, not made up enough, lacking in conversation, or "Like your hair wasn't holding up"????? Am I the only person that feels like I don't fit in when in a strange social situation? Do you look around at how everyone is dressed and then think-"OH NO-Why did I wear this?" Does it seem that everyone knows everyone else and you are the strange man out? Are you struggling to find someone to have a conversation with and then a topic that won't bore them to tears?
For a woman that is pretty confident of herself in most situations, these large social functions can send me into a tail spin. I will spend days after the event agonizing over what I said or didn't say, or what I did or didn't do. I don't feel totally outclassed intellectually very often, just occassionally, but the social galas can leave me cowering in the corner and praying for Scotty to "Beam me away."
What happened along the way to cause this social retardation? I am married to the social butterfly of Ruston, so why can't I pick up some of his social adaptiveness? One on one is no problem-I can take a social history with the best of them. I will ask just the right questions and have you telling me your family's deepest secrets! Oh, but start adding numbers to the equation and I am beginning to get that sinking feeling of lead boots in quick sand.

I think you are just a regular person and this is a common experience to most humans. I say most cuz Jim never worries about what he has said or didn't say. He is a "is what it is" guy and doesn't appear to worry much about other people's impressions unless they have negative impressions about his piano playing. Then he worries. Maybe it is an X chromosome thing.
I have agonized over something I said before, but the older I get the less this happens. I know just about anything I say will be taken wrongly by someone. I have learned that just eating in the teachers' lounge. I think getting older if sorta freeing. Just think to yourself, "will this make any difference in eternity?". That seems to work for me.
Also, you never seem uncomfortable and you always look classy no matter what you have on! You are fit so nothing can look bad on you. You have that beauty from the inside out so quit worrying about what you are wearing!

I used to be like that....not anymore. I am hot, funny, and have mucho interesting conversation....screw anyone that doesn't like me....is what i say!!!! I dress mighty fine too hehehehehe. I do get irritated though when I see on my counter that over 200 people in 4 days have read my blog but only like 3 have commented. I always make sure to comment when I read.....it IS important for people to know that what they have written is valid...even no matter how silly it may be. I guess that is when I feel out of place.....if that makes sense. I would never read someone's blog and not comment that I have been there. To me that is kind of like being a voyouer (sp), even if you don't have anything nice to say hahahaha. Just say HI. oooooh I am probably way off base now from what you wrote. You just described me. I HATE large social gatherings - it must be a James problem. Think about dad - he eats supper at 4:30 in the afternoon to avoid other humans in restaurants. I married the other social butterfly in Ruston. We balance each other out.
I think it helps to know that almost everyone else you're talking to is insecure and worried about what they're saying/wearing/eating/doing. You can make it your goal to make THEM feel validated!
