THE CURSE OF OLD AGE!

The night began as so many other nights-I am on the computer and watching the tube while BC is taking his early evening nap. For most of our lives together, BC has come home from work and taken an hour to three hour nap on the couch in the early evening hours. Old habits are difficult to break and this is a habit of MANY years. I DIGRESS!

I begin to watch a silly little movie and the next thing I know it is 10:30 and WAY past my pre-run bedtime. Like Henry---I have missed my sleep clues and that means trouble! We go to bed around 11 and somewhere around midnight, I finally manage to go to sleep. The alarm goes off at 5:05 which is the very last minute I can get up and make my running date.

At sometime just after 2 AM, I sit straight up in bed. I hear water falling and think of my new outdoor furniture cushions. I bolt out of the bed and take off outside CONVINCED that it is raining. Out the back door I go-to only discover that the sprinklers had gone off-NO RAIN-just sprinkling.

As I go back into the house, there is BC in the den staring at me. He had gotten up sometime after I finally went to sleep suffering with reflux after pizza (JALAPENOS) for supper. He thinks I am sleep walking and wonders WHERE I could be going. I relate the story and head back to bed.

He comes to bed sometime later, just as I have begun to drift off. A "HIGH MAINTENANCE" sleeper, I hear each and every sound of the night and wake up. He gets settled and FINALLY I drift off again.

At 4:30 AM, I wake at my usual "wake up" time and start looking at the clock. I am telling myself I am TOO tired to run this AM. Finally at 4:50ish I drift off again. THE CLOCK ALARM GOES OFF at 5:05. I GIVE!

I get up and slip into my running clothes, brush my teeth, and out the door with a bottle of water. I am not happy and KNOW it will not be a good day, BUT I am RESIGNED that I might as well get my butt out of the bed.

IT WAS NOT A GOOD RUN-IN FACT IT WAS A TERRIBLE RUN! Oh well-there's always tomorrow. Hopefully I will sleep better tonight-BUT YOU NEVER KNOW! This used to never happen-I slept the sleep of the dead everynight-but with OLD AGE-that has all changed.

GETTING OLD IS NOT FOR THE FAINT OF HEART!

Tell BC he will have to do the power nap thing....no more than 30 mins. It does wonders and doesn't steal your life.

I have been sleeping 9 hours lately.... and sleeping hard, too. I will be breaking this habit soon and getting back into my routine. I could never jump up at 5 and do anything....not without a lot of protest.
